Pub Church

The disciple enters the temple,
immediately approaches the imitation wood finish altar,
and is offered by the priestess
(for this is a progressive religion)
the transubstantiated fluid of enlightenment.
He sits and imbibes,
eager to attain the altered state
of heightened spiritual awareness,
assisted in this endeavour by
the colourful rays
emitted by the visual stimulator,
presenting images of violent contest,
reminding all of the eternal struggle,
overlaid by rhythmic repetitive hymns,
chosen by members of the congregation
constantly calling the faithful to prayer.
Having drawn deeply and repeatedly from
the bottomless cup of enlightenment,
thoroughly entranced,
the devout worshipper approaches
one of the brightly illuminated shrines,
and pays his tithe.
But in this church
the deity is generous yet fickle.
He reveals His favoured sons
in a seemingly random fashion,
with a flurry of gold coins,
falling like manna from heaven.
